![]() The researchers said wider access to cytisine worldwide remained an issue. Affordable and effective – but not widely available Results from extended dosing studies may even show greater promise for cytisine’s clinical effectiveness,” said Dr Courtney. “A short treatment period of 25 days for cytisine compared to three months for varenicline is an added benefit, but to establish this initial treatment effect so early is very promising. The researchers also found promising results towards the end of cytisine treatment period – 42.5 per cent of cytisine participants quit at ~4 weeks, compared to 32.3 per cent in the varenicline group. Dr Courtney said: “At four-month follow-up, the proportion of participants stopping treatment use because of an adverse event was much lower for cytisine – 16.5 per cent compared to 34.3 per cent of participants allocated to the varenicline group.” Treatment discontinuation rates were also significantly improved for participants that had used cytisine compared to varenicline. This is an encouraging result that may lead to more smokers taking up this treatment option, as we know such adverse effects often lead to treatment discontinuation,” he said. ![]() ![]() “We found adverse events for cytisine users occurred less frequently compared to varenicline, with participants reporting nausea and abnormal dreams significantly less. However, they established other important findings in the context of cytisine’s short standard dosing period of 25 days compared to varenicline’s three-month treatment: they found cytisine was associated with fewer side effects than varenicline.ĭr Courtney said people who smoked often stopped use of smoking cessation aids because of side effects, such as nausea. The researchers were unable to conclude non-inferiority of cytisine compared to varenicline. The study found 11.7 per cent of participants in the cytisine group remained abstinent from tobacco smoking for six months, whereas 13.3 per cent of the varenicline group remained abstinent across the same time period. Participants that reported six-month continuous abstinence from tobacco smoking via telephone interview at 7-month follow-up were asked to complete a carbon monoxide (CO) test to verify the primary smoking abstinence outcome. The study compared standard dosing for both medications – cytisine for 25 days and varenicline for three months – with participants randomly allocated to one of the two medication groups and followed up over a seven-month study period. Research participants were daily smokers when they entered the trial and were willing to make a quit attempt using one of the study medications. In this type of trial, researchers seek to establish that one type of treatment – in this case, cytisine – is “no worse” than the established treatment, varenicline. “But before this trial, we didn’t know whether it is non-inferior to varenicline in terms of quit smoking rates at standard dosing.”ĭr Courtney and a team at UNSW’s National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) have answered this question by recruiting 1452 Australian adults into a world-leading non-inferiority trial. “Cytisine acts similarly to varenicline and reduces urges to smoke and other nicotine withdrawal symptoms,” said study lead author, Dr Ryan Courtney. Trial findings were published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). ![]() ![]() Results from the largest trial to date to compare cytisine’s effectiveness to the most effective single-form pharmacotherapy treatment, varenicline, could lead to wider cytisine access for people who smoke. Used together, the patch and the gum or lozenge can provide much better relief from nicotine cravings than they can when used alone.Cytisine is a safe and effective aid for helping people quit smoking – and a new UNSW-led study has shown participants tolerated it better than a first-line pharmacotherapy for smoking cessation. Meanwhile, the gum or lozenge delivers a small amount of nicotine within 15 minutes, helping you to manage tough situations and keeping your mouth busy as you ride out the cravings. Why? The patch delivers a steady stream of nicotine for 24 hours, so you get long-acting, consistent relief from withdrawal symptoms, such as headaches and irritability. This means you can use nicotine gum and patches together, or you can use nicotine lozenges and patches together. But you can boost your odds even more by combining nicotine replacement therapies, such as the long-acting patch with either gum or lozenges, which are faster acting. gum? Compared to going cold turkey, using patches, gum and lozenges can dramatically increase your chances of successfully quitting tobacco.
